Exercise #4

Barriers

Barrier 1 “Misunderstanding what is meant by criticism”:

Some people get angry when people criticize their actions or their words; and that is because they don’t know that the criticism is for two reasons, one positive and the other one is negative. The positive criticism is to show what is good on which they criticized, either the negative criticism is to show what is not good on which they criticized and fix it in the future. For example, when the teacher corrects the homework for the student he shows to the student his mistakes to fix them in the future.

Barrier 2 “Lack of methods and strategies”:

There is no fixed way to improve critical skills, but I think that reading and listening to the older people who have enough experience in life is a good way to improve the critical skills for anyone.

Barrier 3 “Lack of practice”:

If you do not exercise criticism thus critical skills then surely it will weaken, so you should exercise criticism from time to time and the other to ensure the survival of critical knowledge.

Barrier 4 “Reluctance to criticism those with more expertise”:

It means that you should not be afraid to enter into a discussion with those who you think is better than you, such as the debate between the teacher and the student, and also the teacher might learn something from his student. No one knows everything, so don't be afraid to criticize anything at any time.

Barrier 5 “Affective reasons”:

In order to be a good critic, you should know that emotion may affect your critical skills, so you should keep your emotions aside, and you should know that criticism does not mean to be only a fanatic for your opinion, but also to accept the opinions of others.

Barrier 6 “Mistaking information for understanding”:

One of the coaches in my work has authored a scenario to teach the trainees something. The scenario was revolves around two people, One of them asks a question and the other one answers it. The coach is the one who was asking questions and one of the trainees was answering. The coach asked the first question and did not pay attention to the answer, he repeated this action to the second and third question, so the trainee was angry on the coach and he did not understand the coach's intent of this action, where he wants to show the trainees that attention is important for the coach and the trainee.

Barrier 7 “Insufficient focus and attention to detail”:

If you want to criticize something you need to take care of the details and do not rely on superficial things. Also you must have compelling reasons to show your point of view.

  2. well done

I think that the second barrier is reasonable but you can read books too if you need critical skills. (scientific books} or (logic books).
